Sphere packing
Maryna Viazovska is a Ukrainian mathematician, born in Kyiv. She studied in Ukraine and Germany and earned her PhD at the University of Bonn in 2013. She is a professor at EPFL in Switzerland.
In 2022, she became the second woman to receive a Fields Medal, one of the major awards in mathematics.
Her work asks how tightly identical spheres can be packed without overlapping. In 2016, she proved the best possible packing in eight dimensions; with collaborators, she also solved the problem in 24 dimensions. Finding an arrangement and proving that nothing can beat it are different challenges. Try a smaller version below: fit as many identical disks as you can into three shapes. This game uses flat disks and finite regions to introduce the idea of packing.
How many disks can you fit?
Drag disks onto the shape and rearrange them to fit more. Green disks count. A disk turns red with an × if it overlaps another disk or crosses the boundary. All disks involved in an overlap stop counting until you move them apart. Disks may touch. Choose Finish round when you are ready to compare.
Round 1 of 3
Rectangle
A wide rectangle. Every disk must fit entirely inside it.
Your packing · Green disks count. Red disks with × need moving.
All placed disks count.
Or select this button, move the cursor with the arrow keys, and press Enter to place.
Drag a disk onto the rectangle to begin.
Place or move disks without dragging
On the board, arrow keys move the cursor 10 units; hold Shift for 1 unit. Enter or Space places a disk or moves the selected disk. Escape cancels a selection; Delete removes a selected disk. You can also use the numbered controls here.
Cursor: x = 200, y = 150.
Positions are measured in board units. Each disk has radius 40. Nearby valid positions can snap into place, so exact dragging is not required.

Finding a good arrangement can be quick; proving that it is the best possible can be much harder. Viazovska’s breakthrough did both for sphere packing in eight dimensions.
